2-Day Knife Class
Service Description
From the early exploration of the American continent by the countries of the “Old World” to modern times, hand forged knives have played a significant role in our history. Although factory made knives became ubiquitous during the fur trade era of the early nineteenth century, knives have been hand forged by individual blacksmiths throughout our history. Using high carbon tool steel, the knives created in this 2-day class will be made using traditional blacksmithing methods passed down by generations. Students will hand forge the beveled edge with hammer and anvil, heat treat and finish with file and sand paper. Modern methods of stock removal with grinders or belt sanders will be minimized. The completed knives will be about 10 inches in overall length having a simple wood slab handle mechanically joined to the knife tang by 3 copper rivets. They will have a rustic finish bearing the telltale evidence of their creation in the forge and at the anvil while paying homage to the blacksmiths of the past.
